I was educated at the local comprehensive school and somehow achieved enough A levels to return to London and study at University College.
On leaving, I worked in a children’s home in India, spent a couple of years in publishing, trained as a teacher and finally ended up beautiful windswept village on the Suffolk coast. Here my three children were born and pushed around the village in a huge old pram that could fit them all in at once. Many of the scenes in Tom’s Daughters take place in this village which is known in the book as Cobbleford.
Cobbleford with its castle and its church regarding each other across the roofs of the cottages is a very special place. Like Tom in the novel, my own father is buried there.
A job move took the family to Amsterdam, city of canals and gables, and home to the Van Gogh museum. My second novel, Painting Sunflowers – scheduled for publication in 2012 – is set there.
On returning to the UK, I spent an inspiring year at the University of East Anglia and obtained an MA in Creative Writing.
This was followed by remarriage and a romantic dash to the south of France with my husband and two car loads of dogs, cats and children. I still live in the Midi, France, writing, teaching and welcoming guests to the huge, stone Chateau that Chris and I are slowly renovating.visualizza meno
