He recounted his childhood in his semi-autobiographical novel, Le Bonheur des tristes (The Happiness of the Unhappy), which was shortlisted for the Prix Goncourt in 1935. His father died when he was only a few years old, and his mother, an alcoholic and drug addict and frequently ill, was often unable to look after him. He spent time with relatives and in institutions for boys with disabilities, as well as doing a stint as a farmboy.
After his mother’s death when he was 18, with the encouragement of friends and mentors, he turned to the arts, producing works of photography and poetry besides The Happiness of the Unhappy and the second volume of his semi-autobiographical novel, L’Apprentissage de la ville (My Apprenticeship in the City) which appeared in 1942.
In August of 1944, while working at the front as an orderly, he was caught in a bombardment and wounded slightly in the foot. The wound became gangrenous, however, and because of his poor health in general, he did not survive it.visualizza meno
