(1920-2003) was an American folklorist, sailor, and former Professor of American Literature at Middlebury College in Vermont. Born on September 27, 1920, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952. He was a traditional storyteller and a master of folklore; he began sailing at age three, made some twenty-eight transatlantic crossings, and became the first white man allowed on the whaling ships in the West Indies and the South Pacific’s Tonga. Fluent in five languages, he wrote a dozen books, including Folklore in Action (1962), Gluskap the Liar, & Other Indian Tales (1966), Folklore and the Sea (1973). In his youth, he wrestled for ten years and had his ear torn half off, but was never pinned. He lived in his mountain home in Ripton, Vermont, and was a regular presence on national public radio. He passed away at his home on July 1, 2003, at the age of 82.
ARTHUR KELLY DAVID HEALY (1902-1978) was an American painter, architect, writer and lecturer. Born in New York City in 1902, the son of Troy T. Healy and Mary Warner Fletcher Healy, Beck studied at Princeton University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1924 and Master of Fine Arts degree in 1926. He spent a year studying at the École Beaux Arts, one of France’s most influential art schools, on a French Government grant in 1925. He also studied Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania and the Fontainebleau School in France. His prize-winning artwork was exhibited across America for more than four decades. He settled in Vermont, where he taught at Middlebury College from 1944-1949. He became a member of the Yaddo Foundation in 1954 and President and Chairman of the Board at Sheldon Museum in 1957. He was a member of the Board of Historical Sites of Vermont from 1969-1971. He died in 1978 and is buried in Foote Street Cemetery in Middlebury, Vermont.visualizza meno
