He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University, cum laude, in 1971, emphasizing history and political science. He received a Master of Business Administration degree from Brigham Young University in 1973 and a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Brigham Young University in 1978. He practiced law for thirty-seven years as a city attorney in civil and criminal law, and in private practice, including fraud, insurance, contracts, business, estate planning, litigation, and family law. During 2005–2006 he was president of the Central Utah Bar Association. In addition to the above, he gained a practical education as a husband, father, and neighbor, which he thinks is as valuable as his formal education.
