My research interests include how students learn to do research, how algorithmic personalization and persuasion influence society, and how social issues are represented in crime fiction. I also occasionally write crime fiction of my own (and review it, too).In the Dark is actually the third in a series that started back in 2008 and was published by Minotaur. It shouldn't be necessary to read the first two (In the Wind and Through the Cracks) unless you're one of those readers who feels compelled to read series in order. Personally, I'm too impulsive, and kind of like reading in any older order and piecing together the character's backstory as I go. I wrote this book bearing in mind people who hadn't read the other books (or did and forgot all the details).More recently, I wrote Runtime, combining my experiences teaching at a small liberal arts college with my interest in the ways technology is influencing society - in this case, imagining what might happen if a company like Cambridge Analytica could actually deliver on its promises. It follows a young woman who is on the run from powerful forces who takes shelter in another woman's identity before she is forced to confront her past and the technology she helped to develop. In my work as a librarian I was a champion of open access to research. These books were formatted and made available online thanks to the Minnesota Library Publishing Project, which makes the PressBooks platform available to Minnesotans at no charge. I introduced it to faculty who have used it for courses and for their own research. While I don't expect anyone involved in writing and publishing fiction to give their work away for free, I am in the fortunate position of being able to do that. And I really, truly, deeply hate the business of marketing and promotion. If you read my stories, I hope you enjoy them. So many books, so little time.visualizza meno
