The magic mountain

It seems that the Italians are finding a new balance, just like the young Hans Castorp in Thomas Mann’s novel “The Magic Mountain”, the literary masterpiece written almost a century ago. With this year’s lockdown, many have retreated to their houses in the mountains or have thought about buying one. By way of example, a survey conducted by our editorial staff revealed that in the centre of Cortina, property prices have reached almost 20 thousand euros per square metre. Not all Italian mountain destinations are so inaccessible, but there is no denying that the property market outside of the big cities is growing, even if business is still conducted primarily in the historic urban centres where tourists no longer roam. This December, just like every year, is dedicating a special edition to the mountains, with three interior design projects in Cortina, Verbier and Chamonix created by renowned architects and interior designers (Ambra Piccin, Alessia Mainardi and Nick Dobree). The edition also showcases new decor, inspirations and styles in perfect harmony with the mountains. The December issue opens with a penthouse in the middle of Paris, in Rue de Rivoli, between the Louvre and the Tuileries Garden. The English architect Badrieh Johari has just transformed the interior into a wonderful, classic yet contemporary, luxurious space. The home furnishing section showcases many innovations and the latest trends, from fabrics to mattresses, kitchens to fireplaces, and finishes with the Pantone colours of 2021 that are currently inspiring design studios and interior decorators alike. This Christmas issue concludes with a feature on the Puster Valley in South Tyrol (Alto Adige), where new gondola lifts will help reduce queuing in the Dolomiti Superski resort. In
