Foreword
There is only one thing guaranteed in life, and that is death. Harsh, I know, but it's the truth. Since we entered this world through our mother's wombs, we were destined for the grave. If you are religious or spiritual, you may believe in life after death. But on earth, in our earthly bodies and our earthly minds, our fate is determined. We all die, and until science proves otherwise, there is nothing we can do about it.
This is a scary thought, and it brings anxiety to many people. When we're young, it's hard to imagine that we will ever grow old. We live our lives carefree, and before we know it, we're 40 years old. In a blink of an eye, that number is now 50. Then 60. Then 70. Life moves fast, but it is impossible to grasp just how short it is. I don't mean to bring down the mood, nor do I want to scare you. But there is a scene to be set, and it is imperative to understand that our ride will come to an end. If our lives have an expiry date, which is unknown to us, should we not live them to their fullest potential?
When I look around at our country, I am deeply saddened by a lack of living. Too many people are simply surviving life and not living in the moment. Most live paycheck to paycheck, wasting away at their jobs only to have no time or money for themselves. Of course, this isn't totally their fault, as circumstance and situation do not favor every individual. In fact, everyone is dealt a different hand. My life may have been easier than yours, or vice-versa. Even though it's a reality for many people in this country and the world, using a victim mentality is counterproductive. What saddens me most is people who use their poor hands as an excuse to no longer try.
This can stem from a few places. The first place is fear. There is a certain sense of comfort found in routine, even if it is destructive. Grinding at a dead-end job may bring zero happiness, but it also has zero surprises. Doing the exact same thing every day, though boring, is relatively risk-free. Thus, people are scared to step outside of their bubble and break the routine.
The second place where the excuse can come from is a lack of knowledge. For many people, especially in low-income communities, this lifestyle is all that they know. Nobody around them has broken free of the cycle, and no one has found success. And while success is not required to live your life to the fullest, is finding happiness, not success itself ?
I don't want to rag on these people but instead, show them that there is another way to approach life. Instead of living to survive, live to live. Instead of dragging your feet numbly day-to-day, do the things you really want to do. You may feel that you do not have the financial freedom to enjoy life, and I want to tell you that you're wrong. Happiness can come from anywhere and anything, big or small. The only thing separating happy, successful people and sad folks is their mindset.
Elena understands this and has knocked her book out of the park. She knows that while some people may struggle, there is light at the end of the tunnel if they
