Catalogo Ettore Roesler Franz - Francesco e Pierluigi Roesler Franz
Preface
Ettore Roesler Franz is a name that is dear to us, especially if we have already had the pleasure of reading and admiring the works dedicated to him. He is an artist who from time to time leaves us astonished, because just when we thought we had learned to understand him and discover everything about him, here he surprises us with a new detail, a new anecdote, an unexpected colour, that brush- stroke that makes all the difference.
In this work, we rediscover the artist we loved so much, but also that family bond that softens and intrigues us, that with its strength becomes an added value to the undeniable talent ofa great Italian artist.
Pierluigi Roesler Franz has carefully constructed this catalogue, carefully choosing which works to show and why.
We remain enchanted in front of Francesco Roesler Franz’s narrative, because he has the great abil- ity to make the figure of Ettore Roesler Franz magical, almost impalpable, as if it were a dream, weigh- ing the weight of every single word. This is because he knows how to describe a man of such calibre, how to immerse him in an atmosphere that feeds on art and human emotions. Yet, everything he tells us is real, and we feel that life grips us, holds us tightly and shows itself to our eyes thanks to the works of the painter who, with his gestures and precision, has managed to convey history on canvas and make it accessible to the present day.
The description of Ettore Roesler Franz’s personal history is impressive, because by showing us him in his humanity and vulnerability, Franz has managed to make him incredibly close to us. We are able to empathise with what he experiences and by discovering the story that made him so we are able to understand even more the works he signed, because their meaning never finds an end.
The four young Roesler Franz attended the school of St John Baptist de La Salle at Trinità dei Monti, and so every morning they crossed the Spanish Steps to the famous staircase. This, built by Francesco de Sanctis to compensate for the sharp difference in height between the square and the church of the Holy Trinity, forms the axis ofa symbolicpath, rising from the underground waters that feedBernini’s fountain la Barcaccia to the celestial archetype of the church of the Trinity. The initiatory symbolism of the world’s most famous square was completed in 1806 with theplacement of an obelisk in front of the Trinity church, an icon of the relationship between earth and sky, emphasising the initiatory ascent towards the light.
There were so many personalities, friendships and influences that left their mark on the life of Ettore Roesler Franz, and it is with pleasure, curiosity and even amusement that we discover them, we weave the connections, understand how we are all, in the end, connected in some way.
With his works, the artist has managed to give watercolour a new strength, to concentrate a mix- ture of artistic, cultural and literary influences on himself, ranging from Vedutism to Verism and European Realism. Accompanying us on this journey, we discover techniques, attitudes and symbols that we might not have fully understood on our own.
But Ettore Roesler Franz, as we discover, was also a photographer, a man ready to leave a testimony of his times, to immortalise the social, physical and psychological conditions of the people he painted, which we can treasure today because otherwise we would never have had the chance to understand what he was.
In addition to paintbrushes and easels, Ettore wandered about with the kinegraph, a primordial camera, of which he was one of the first painters in the world to use this new tool.
He wandered the alleys and courtyards, streets and squares of the capital, before parts of the centre of Rome were demolished to make way for the muraglioni, the new banks of the Tiber river, or for new build- ings (such as the Synagogue or the Altare della Patria in Piazza Venezia) or entire new built-up areas (such as the Prati district).
The careful analysis of the artist’s work stems from a deep desire to share a historical and human heritage that can change our view of the world, make us more involved in life, more receptive, more attentive to others. And so it is that among the words of Francesco Roesler Franz we also read those of the artist, moving us and preserving them as a fragile and precious gift.
Catalogo Ettore Roesler Franz is an intimate and personal work, which behind its more expository and manualistic intent conceals a story that fills our hearts and minds, that makes us see the world through the eyes of an artist and that makes us grow as human beings.

Ettore Roesler Franz nacque l’11 maggio 1845 in via Condotti 133 da Luigi e Teresa Biondi e ebbe tre fratelli Francesco, Alessandro e Adolfo.

, Circolo letterario, trasferitosi in seguito a palazzo Lepri a via Condotti.
